Tijuana Reinventing Itself Through Food
- Hits: 800
TIJUANA, Mexico (KGTV) - Good food doesn鈥檛 just feed your stomach - it feeds your soul. Right now, there鈥檚 arguably no better place to feed both than a city that鈥檚 become a new player in the foodie world, and it's just south of San Diego.
Food critics and enthusiasts have their sights set on Tijuana. For years, Tijuana has had the stereotype as a place for good tacos 鈥 something readily available nearly everywhere you look. In fact, Chef Oso Campos and his hotspot Kokopelli do it so well, that new restaurants in major U.S. cities like San Diego and Los Angeles have come calling for his help.
鈥淲hen they first wanted to open, they liked the idea of authentic Tijuana tacos," Campos said. "So they asked me to come and make the menu for them."
These days, tacos are just the beginning. Check many a travel or food blog and you'll find that Tijuana is listed as a "must-go." The New York Times even listed Tijuana as a top destination in 2017 - prompting many to call what鈥檚 going on there a "culinary renaissance.
鈥淭he food scene and the wine scene in Baja California changed it all,鈥 said Giovanni Brassea, Chef at Humo, a popular spot inside Tijuana鈥檚 Telefonica Gastropark - basically a hipster food truck park. 鈥淎 lot of people are coming back just to eat with us.鈥
Brassea calls it a movement and says at Humo, they鈥檝e been feeding guests from all over the world.
鈥淚t just gives you the chills, it gives me the chills right now, honestly it does,鈥 Brassea said. 鈥淭he whole scene, the beer scene, the food scene, they鈥檙e working really hard together to make this city better and change the whole image.鈥
Hey -- if you haven't checked out the Tijuana food scene yet- you're missing out! We'll take you to some hotspots on

If you know Tijuana鈥檚 history, you know it wasn鈥檛 always this way. It was once impossible to think of Tijuana without thinking of the violence, drugs and crime.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 have the best reputation, sadly, but it鈥檚 changing, and we鈥檙e helping it change,鈥 Brassea said.
Nowhere is that more evident than at upscale Mision 19, a restaurant that's at the center of Tijuana's reinvention, with renowned Chef Javier Plascencia.
Don鈥檛 believe me? Take it from food critic Anthony Bourdain. When asked during an interview what his favorite restaurant is in San Diego, he said the following:
鈥淣o disrespect to San Diego, there鈥檚 a lot of fine restaurants. I personally would drive over to Tijuana and go to Mision 19, and go to Javier Placencia鈥檚 place.鈥
Even with the progress, the people who live and work there know that the city will face more challenges. But once you鈥檝e tried the food, you鈥檒l believe what they believe - right now, it鈥檚 their food that鈥檚 feeding the city鈥檚 soul.
